The Norwegian Nobel Committee honored the 85-year-old "for her efforts to promote peace and international law," placing particular emphasis on her career holding states and political leaders accountable.
Pillay's work on Gaza became one of the most consequential and controversial chapters of that career.
From 2021 until November 2025, she chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel. Established by the UN Human Rights Council, the commission investigated violations committed by all sides and collected evidence that could be used in future legal proceedings.
Its first major report following Oct. 7, 2023, found in June 2024 that Israeli authorities were responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity during military operations in Gaza. It also concluded that Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups committed war crimes during their attacks in Israel, including deliberately killing civilians and taking hostages.
