Ahiska Turks were expelled from the Meskheti region of Georgia by Soviet leader Joseph Stalin in 1944. They also faced discrimination and human rights abuses before and after the Soviet deportation.
Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Türkiye was the first country to recognize the independence declarations of the republics in Central Asia in 1991.

The Ahiska Turks living in Central Asia have also begun to visit Anatolian lands, which they have known as their homeland for 162 years, thanks to the independence of their country.
