Advanced technology used to prevent illegal crossings from Türkiye-Iran border

The Ağrı section of the Turkey-Iran border is fortified with an integrated security wall as part of the Border Physical Security System Project, initiated by the Presidency and completed in 2020. This project, coordinated by the Ministry of Interior, the General Directorate of Provincial Administration, and the Border Management Department, maximizes the utilization of cutting-edge technology to ensure the highest level of border security. The border wall is under constant surveillance, operating around the clock, thanks to the implementation of various advanced technologies. The presence of security forces actively operating day and night in the border region, in combination with these measures and the effective utilization of advanced technology, serves as a significant deterrent against the infiltration of PKK terrorists, human smugglers, and irregular migrants attempting to enter or exit the country. Governor Osman Varol pointed finger at the significance of Ağrı, which shares an 87-kilometer border with Iran, as a target for immigration, particularly from Afghanistan. Governor Varol emphasized the multifaceted nature of the security system in place, highlighting the combination of physical barriers, surveillance technology, and well-equipped infrastructure to enhance border protection measures. Varol further explained that in the 1.5-kilometer stretch where it is challenging to construct the wall due to difficult geographical conditions, seismic sensors have been strategically placed beneath the ground with wire application. This modern system is capable of detecting any living entity that passes over it, ensuring comprehensive surveillance. Moreover, Varol highlighted the presence of advanced electro-optical towers, developed domestically by ASELSAN. These towers incorporate remote sensing and imaging systems, and they stand tall with cutting-edge technologies. The combination of seismic sensors and electro-optical towers exemplifies the utilization of state-of-the-art systems to enhance border security and effectively detect and monitor movements in the region. Varol drew attention to the effectiveness of the measures implemented, stating that they have significantly strengthened their position in combating illegal immigration. He revealed that the completion of the border wall in December 2020 has played a crucial role in this success. Since then, approximately 13,800 cases of irregular migrants attempting to cross the border have been successfully prevented. These numbers represent the successful prevention of illegal entry into the country. Furthermore, Varol shared that within their borders, they have apprehended approximately 2,250 individuals who have violated immigration laws. Among these individuals, around 2,060 were categorized as other immigrants. Following proper legal procedures, they have been processed and deported in compliance with international law. Varol took notice of the significant efforts being made to combat migrant smugglers, stating that they have taken serious action against these criminal activities. As a result, 87 suspects involved in migrant smuggling have been apprehended this year. Among them, 23 individuals have been arrested, and 23 vehicles used for smuggling purposes have been confiscated. Speaking about the overall security situation at the border, Varol emphasized the effectiveness of the integrated border security system and its impact on ensuring safety. With the completion of this system across all borders, they have established well-spaced and adequately manned border posts. Varol also noted the successful efforts in curbing commodity smuggling, which has been drastically reduced to almost zero. The dedication and hard work of various state units have contributed to this achievement. Additionally, the robust border security measures have played a crucial role in minimizing drug smuggling activities.
