In a post on social media, Ali Şahin, an AK Party member of parliament from Gaziantep, said he met in São Paulo, Brazil, with Sheikh Jihad Hammadeh, a prominent figure in the Islamic community, and representatives of the Brazilian Islamic Charitable Youth Union.
Şahin said that Sheikh Jihad Hammadeh shared the news during the meeting, claiming that Roberto Carlos had allegedly embraced Islam.
Şahin said: "Sheikh Jihad Hammadeh shared the good news that Roberto Carlos, a legend of world and Brazilian football who also played for Fenerbahçe, had been in contact with him for a long time and visited him four weeks ago, where he recited the Shahada and embraced Islam. I congratulate Roberto Carlos on embracing Islam and wish him and his family a life filled with peace, health and blessings."
Carlos married Moroccan-born Spanish businesswoman Suheyla Tahiri. Neither Roberto Carlos nor his family has yet issued a statement on the matter.
