Japan "strongly protests" a visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin to the disputed Kuril islands, Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said Thursday.
"The Northern Territories ... are an inherent part of Japan's territory both historically and under international law, and the government of Japan strongly protests this visit," Motegi said in a statement, using the Japanese name for the islands.
