Death toll from US-Israeli strike on Iran’s landmark B1 bridge rises to 8

The death toll from the US-Israeli strike on Iran's B1 bridge in the northern city of Karaj rose to eight on Thursday, while 95 others were wounded, according to authorities in Alborz province.

In a statement, the province said the latest toll followed the second US-Israeli strike on the bridge earlier in the day, which destroyed its central section.

Authorities described the B1 bridge as the "highest in the Middle East."

Iranian media had initially reported that two people were killed in the attack.

In a post on US social media company X, Abbas Araghchi said attacks on civilian infrastructure showed "the defeat and moral collapse of an enemy in disarray."

"Striking civilian structures, including unfinished bridges, will not compel Iranians to surrender," Araghchi wrote.

The US and Israel struck the strategic transport bridge twice on Thursday, reducing large sections of it to rubble.

Videos circulating on social media showed major parts of the nearly 1-kilometer-long structure collapsing after the attacks.

According to Iranian media, the bridge was designed to ease traffic congestion between Tehran and Karaj and improve access to Iran's northern provinces.

The region has been on alert since the US and Israel launched an air offensive on Feb. 28, so far killing over 1,340 people, including then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Iran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, along with Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets, causing casualties and damage to infrastructure while disrupting global markets and aviation.
