A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck off southern Mindanao in the Philippines with no immediate reports of damage; earlier, a 5.4 quake hit Japan's Kyushu island.

A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck off the southern Philippines on Tuesday, said the German Research Center for Geosciences.
The quake hit the waters near the southern Mindanao island of the Southeast Asian country at 1045GMT, originating at a depth of 10 kilometers (nearly 6.2 miles).
There were no immediate reports of damage to life or infrastructure.
Early Tuesday, a 5.4 magnitude earthquake hit Japan's southern island of Kyushu, according to the US Geological Survey.
