At least five people died after a primary school under construction collapsed in the Belgian port city of Antwerp, the Belga news agency reported on Saturday.

Rescue services found four bodies on Saturday, after a first body was discovered after the building collapsed on Friday.

Belga reported that it was being verified whether all those missing had now been recovered.

Nine other people were injured - including eight seriously - when the scaffolding and parts of the building collapsed in the district of Nieuw Zuid. Their condition was stable. The person who only suffered light injuries was able to leave the hospital.

The victims were all believed to be construction workers.

Belga reported that sniffer dogs were being used to search the rubble.

It is not known what caused the building to collapse. The construction firm said that it was "too soon" to try and answer those questions now, but it was doing everything to find out the cause of the collapse.

Belgian King Philippe expressed his condolences and said he would visit the site of the incident.
