Seasonal harvest begins for agricultural laborers in apricot-rich Malatya

In Malatya, where a significant portion of the world's dried apricot production takes place, the challenging seasonal work of agricultural laborers has begun. In this city, where approximately 9 million out of Türkiye's 22 million apricot trees are located, the harvest is ongoing. The region is home to 32 different apricot varieties, such as 'Hasanbey,' 'Kabaaşı,' 'Hacıhaliloğlu,' and 'Alyanak.' Malatya apricot, known as 'mişmiş' locally and registered as a protected geographical indication by the European Union, contributes to the livelihood of approximately 50,000 families in the region. Indeed, the apricot harvest season serves as an income opportunity for seasonal agricultural workers, making it a significant source of income for them during this period. As the most important source of revenue for the city, apricot farming provides economic benefits to both local farmers and seasonal laborers. During the harvest season, many seasonal workers come from cities such as Şanlıurfa, Adıyaman, and Diyarbakır to participate in apricot picking and drying activities. These workers engage in apricot-related tasks for approximately two months, contributing to the successful harvest and processing of the fruit in the region. In Kendirli Mahallesi, Yeşilyurt district of Malatya, seasonal agricultural workers arrive at an apricot orchard and start their work with the first light of the morning. Despite the scorching temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius during the day, the workers diligently collect the apricots that have been shaken off the trees with the help of machines. They put the apricots into crates, preparing them to be processed and made ready for further use.
