‘Gigantic explosion,' fire injure 4 in Netherlands: Report

At least four people were injured Thursday after a large fire broke out at a residential building in the center of Utrecht in the Netherlands, following reports of multiple explosions, public broadcaster NOS reported.

The Utrecht Safety Region described the incident as a "gigantic explosion."

Emergency services received multiple reports of explosions around 3.30 pm local time (1430GMT) and responded immediately, with nearby streets cordoned off.

The fire later spread to a nearby bakery around 5 pm (1600GMT), with firefighters continuing to battle flames.

Authorities have yet to ascertain the cause of the blasts.

Utrecht Mayor Sharon Dijksma said authorities do not suspect criminal activity in connection with the explosion, though no scenario has been ruled out.

Authorities said they are investigating a gas leak as the cause, noting it appears to be accidental rather than intentional.

No serious injuries have been reported, Dijksma said at a news conference, and the gas leak has been contained, and the fire is nearly extinguished.

Dijksma confirmed that no one has been reported missing after the explosion, noting that the fire department will continue searching the rubble to ensure everyone is located.

Surrounding buildings sustained damage, though the exact number is not yet known.

Approximately 100 residents have been evacuated and are being sheltered at a hotel, with authorities warning that it could be a long time before they can return home.

A temporary emergency hospital has been established in Utrecht city center, typically reserved for incidents with large numbers of casualties.

Witnesses described the scene as "chaotic." Patrick Tomassen, who was working in a parking garage, told RTV Utrecht, "We heard a very loud bang. The garage shook violently. We ran outside and saw people covered in blood, damaged building facades, and shattered windows."
