The Kremlin said Thursday it is ready to contribute to efforts aimed at easing tensions in the Middle East.

Speaking at a press briefing in Moscow, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said "we are certainly ready to make our contribution to ensuring" peace in the region.

Responding to a question about the Russian-Arab Summit, originally scheduled for last fall but later cancelled, Peskov said the event is unlikely to be held soon due to the ongoing war.

However, he added that the summit could, in the future, serve as a useful platform for easing tensions in the Middle East.

Reaffirming Russia's position, Peskov said President Vladimir Putin supports a "political and diplomatic" settlement to the conflict, as he has repeatedly stated during telephone conversations with leaders from the Persian Gulf and the wider Arab world.

Putin remains in contact with leaders of Gulf and Arab states regarding the situation in Iran, he added.
