South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday declared a national state of disaster over the devastating floods around the east coast city of Durban.

"Cabinet met in a special session last night and decided to declare a state of national disaster," Ramaphosa said in a televised address, noting that the hobbled port of Durban is a lynchpin for the national economy.
