Police Captain Ahmed al-Duleimi said the terrorist organization overran part of the highway in Rutba town in western Iraq.

"The militants have planted landmines and explosives in the part of the road they are controlling," he told Anadolu Agency on Monday.

On Sunday, Daesh militants attacked an Iraqi military convoy in eastern Rutba, killing 10 soldiers and injuring dozens.

Last week, Iraqi forces, backed by U.S.-led air coalition, launched a new offensive to oust Daesh militants from areas under their control in the western Anbar province.
