Brentford thrash Tottenham 3-0 as Spurs’ struggles continue

Brentford produced an emphatic performance to defeat Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday, compounding the visitors' persistent struggles on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

Brentford defeated Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 on Saturday as the visitors' difficult spell continued into the new Premier League season.

Brentford dominated the opening stages at the Gtech Community Stadium and established a two-goal lead before halftime, with Michael Kayode adding a third early in the second half.

The hosts made a fast start, registering four attempts in the opening seven minutes and pinning Tottenham inside their own half.

Brentford took the lead in the 12th minute when Mamadou Sangare broke through the Tottenham defense before finding Keane Lewis-Potter inside the area. The forward finished first time from close range to make it 1-0.

Tottenham gradually settled into the match and enjoyed a longer spell of possession after the 20-minute mark but struggled to create clear opportunities.

Brentford doubled their advantage in the 33rd minute after Richarlison lost possession in his own half. Mathias Jensen drove forward and shot from distance, with Tottenham goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky parrying the effort into the path of Vitaly Janelt, who scored from close range.

The hosts extended their advantage four minutes after the restart. Nathan Collins headed a corner into the path of Sangare, whose powerful effort was saved by Kinsky, but Kayode reacted quickest and converted the rebound from close range.

Tottenham recorded their first shot on target in the 52nd minute after Mathys Tel created space before releasing Andy Robertson down the left. The fullback found Mikey Moore at the far post, but Caoimhin Kelleher produced an important save to deny the young forward from close range.

Brentford were awarded a penalty one minute later after Kevin Schade was brought down by Rodrigo Bentancur.

Igor Thiago stepped up but struck the post in the 55th minute, missing the opportunity to extend the hosts' lead.

Moore went close again in the 62nd minute, but Kelleher saved his effort from inside the penalty area.

Tottenham enjoyed more possession late in the match but could not find a way back into the contest, while Brentford remained comfortable and threatened to add a fourth.

The defeat extended Tottenham's difficult period after they narrowly avoided relegation last season, finishing 17th in the Premier League.

Brentford, meanwhile, secured a convincing victory to begin their campaign with three points.
