Members of Ottawa's diverse Muslim community joined a group of people protesting certain teachings in schools, alongside parental rights advocate Chris Elston (Billboard Chris) and student activist Josh Alexander on Friday. The protest aimed to challenge narratives from activists on both sides, who had resorted to divisive labels such as 'christo-fascists,' 'nazis,' and 'white supremacists' when referring to those supporting Alexander and Elston. During an interview with True North's Rupa Subramanya, a young Muslim woman expressed concern about the inappropriate content being taught to children at a young age. Her mother, who was also present at the protest, added, 'I no longer feel comfortable sending my children to this school.' Another Muslim protester shared with The Counter Signal, 'We want to protect our children from harmful ideologies and unnecessary teachings. Let our kids be kids.' Alexander and Elston had previously announced their intention to protest certain teachings on Ottawa's Broadview Avenue, advocating for 'education over indoctrination' in publicly funded schools. Alexander explained, 'Our goal is to raise awareness about the issue of certain teachings in schools. We strongly believe that constructive conversations are powerful and vital. We hope this event will stimulate productive dialogue.' Soon after the rally was announced, activists with opposing views began discussing plans for a counter-protest. They intended to disrupt the protest in order to voice their opposition to what they perceived as 'hateful' ideas. When asked about his thoughts on the protest, Alexander expressed, 'Today was an encouraging day. Canadians from various backgrounds came together for a common cause.' 'It's rare to witness Muslims and Christians standing united, but today we stood together against what we perceive as a distorted agenda in the education system. Today we achieved a victory, and we will continue to strive for more.' Friday's events in Ottawa were another example of minority communities speaking out against certain aspects of progressive sexual education. Similar cases include a parent group led by Muslims protesting a new mandated LGBTQ curriculum in Maryland, as well as Armenian and Hispanic parents protesting against a California school district's approach to queer education. In Edmonton, a teacher's bigoted tirade targeting Muslim students for their lack of support for LGBTQ pride drew condemnation from the National Council of Canadian Muslims, and the school board took action against the teacherTrans activists who gathered to counterprotest held signs that read among other things, 'we are all born naked, the rest is drag.'
