Now part of Greece, Rhodes was conquered by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent in 1522 and remained under Ottoman rule for about 400 years; the Knights' Castle and the old town of Rhodes are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The Suleymaniye Mosque in the center of Rhodes, one of the Ottomans' first major architectural works on the island, draws attention with its design and courtyard but remains closed to visitors and worshippers, saddening especially Turkish visitors.
Built in honor of Ottoman Grand Vizier Pargalı İbrahim Pasha, the İbrahim Pasha Mosque is the only mosque on the island where Muslims can worship.
