The rocky island covers about 7.3 km².
Its only settlement is Diomede village, home to about 77 people in 2023, mostly from the Iñupiaq community.
From mid-December to mid-June, the strait freezes, limiting transport and shipping.
Locals survive on marine mammal hunting, fishing, bird eggs, and wild plants.
The island has basic services like a school, post office, clinic, heliport, and laundry, but no bank, restaurant, or hotel, and supplies must be flown or shipped in under harsh conditions.
Invisible line runs between the islands and inspired the nicknames "Yesterday" and "Tomorrow" islands.
