Psychologist Büşra Sel says, "There are some signs that a child is ready for toilet training. First and foremost, the child should be able to recognize the need to use the toilet and be aware of it. Additionally, the child's ability to express desires with simple words or gestures, staying dry for a few hours a day, and feeling uncomfortable with wet or dirty diapers are also signs of readiness," she said.

Regarding how to start toilet training, Sel stated, "Before starting toilet training, we must ensure that the child is physically and mentally ready. We should explain to the child how to use the toilet and help them understand in simple terms. Then, we can start the process by encouraging regular toilet visits at intervals."

Sel also provided information about maintaining motivation and situations where the training process becomes challenging: "Maintaining motivation is important. When the training process becomes challenging or the child's motivation drops, using positive approaches such as praise and appreciation can increase the child's motivation. However, sometimes the process can become so challenging that taking a break might be considered. However, when taking a break, make sure the child is still ready for toilet training and make an effort to keep the process from becoming prolonged."

"When starting toilet training, the primary goal is to achieve daytime dryness. Nighttime dryness may not be an immediately acquired skill. However, we do not recommend parents revert to diapers even at night. If a child returns to diapers, even if only at night, they may want to continue using diapers during the day, which can extend the process. Therefore, training pants and mattress protectors can be used both day and night. Additionally, periodically taking the child to the toilet every 2-3 hours during the night can prevent accidents."
