After an unusual decline recorded in 2017, it happened again this year at the end of the summer in the southern hemisphere at the end of February: For the first time, the extent of Antarctic ice actually fell to less than 2 million square kilometres. The extent was about 30% less than the average for the years 1981 to 2010.
