While ice in the Arctic is rapidly decreasing due to global warming, the ice surface in the Antarctic, on the other hand, has tended to increase slightly, by about 1% every decade since the 1970s.
After an unusual decline recorded in 2017, it happened again this year at the end of the summer in the southern hemisphere at the end of February: For the first time, the extent of Antarctic ice actually fell to less than 2 million square kilometres. The extent was about 30% less than the average for the years 1981 to 2010.
