Sweden will invest 8.7 billion Swedish crowns ($916 million) in air defense systems, Defense Minister Pal Jonson said Thursday.
Jonson said the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration has ordered a new mobile counter-drone air defense system designed to protect troops and critical infrastructure, including nuclear power plants, railway hubs and cities, according to the daily Dagens Nyheter.
The procurement will be carried out from several companies under an agreement, including BAE Systems and Saab.
"It is more important than ever to invest in air defense capabilities. Protection against threats from the air is a high priority for the government and we will conclude more agreements to strengthen the Swedish defense," Jonson said in a news release.
Deliveries are expected to begin in 2027, according to the report.
