Severe flooding triggered by Typhoon Maysak in early July has killed 159 people and left 10 missing in two cities in China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, state-run Xinhua News reported on Friday, citing local officials.
The floods, caused by torrential rainfall brought by the typhoon, affected more than 1.65 million people in Nanning, the regional capital, and Guigang, according to post-disaster recovery and construction work conferences held in the two cities.
In Nanning, flooding affected about 579,700 people across 90 townships and subdistricts in 11 counties, districts and county-level cities.
Authorities said 23,300 people were evacuated and 78,300 were relocated to temporary shelters.
Following door-to-door investigations and verification, officials confirmed 136 deaths and 10 missing people in Nanning as of Thursday. Breaches at the Liulan and Yunbiao reservoirs alone accounted for 107 deaths and seven missing people.
In Guigang, floods affected about 1.073 million people across five counties, districts and county-level cities. Authorities evacuated 205,000 people and relocated 15,000 to shelters, while confirming 23 deaths.
Officials said both cities are shifting toward reconstruction and strengthening disaster prevention and response capabilities.
Nanning aims to restore basic order within six months and complete major reconstruction within about a year, while Guigang will prioritize urban flood control and reservoir safety.
