The US Senate on Monday rejected a Democratic proposal to extend government funding as a government shutdown continued for a sixth day.
Lawmakers voted 45-50 against invoking cloture on the motion to proceed.
Now the senators are voting on the House-passed Republican stopgap funding bill.
