Xi invites Trump to visit China again this year

Chinese President Xi Jinping invited US President Donald Trump to make another trip to China as his three-day state visit to Washington concluded on Friday.

During a tea ceremony at the White House, Xi noted that the two leaders could have two further opportunities to meet this year: the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit hosted by China and the G20 summit in Miami in December.

"We invite the president and his wife to visit China," Xi said.

"Well, thank you very much, we will," Trump responded. "And we'll be speaking a lot."

Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan arrived in the US capital on Wednesday for a three-day state visit, with trade tensions between the two superpowers featuring prominently on the agenda.

While both leaders publicly showered each other with warm words, few concrete results have emerged from their face-to-face meetings, with the US expected to release more details on potential progress made over the trade tensions on Monday.

Trump last visited China in May.

This year's APEC summit is scheduled to take place in Shenzhen in November. Russian President Vladimir Putin has said he plans to attend, fuelling speculation about a possible trilateral meeting between Xi, Trump and Putin, although this has not been officially confirmed.

Last year, Trump and Xi met on the sidelines of the APEC summit in South Korea, where they reached a broader trade truce.
