Former Iranian President Hassan Rouhani called Wednesday for urgent and far-reaching political reforms, saying they are necessary to safeguard both Iran and its political system amid the ongoing war.
Rouhani urged the Supreme National Security Council to discuss various scenarios related to either continuing or ending the conflict and to take a decision within a legal framework, Iranian media reported.
He said such a move was necessary to foil what he described as enemy plans.
Protecting the country and the system requires urgent and fundamental political reforms, he said.
Rouhani warned that the Iranian leadership's only remaining asset is public support, adding that the population has serious grievances and demands.
He also stressed the need to draw lessons from previous negotiations with the US.
He said attempts by the enemy to remove uranium from Iranian territory and seize control of several islands in order to dominate the Strait of Hormuz exposed its true intentions.
The US and Israel have maintained an air offensive against Iran since Feb. 28, killing more than 1,340 people so far, including then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Iran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel along with Jordan, Iraq and Gulf countries hosting US military assets, causing casualties and damage to infrastructure while disrupting global markets and aviation.
