UK PM Starmer says Iran conflict 'not our war,' as Trump weighs NATO withdrawal

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the Iran war is "not our war" and that the United Kingdom will not be drawn into it, after President Donald Trump said he is considering pulling the US out of NATO.

Speaking at a news conference in Downing Street, Starmer said his government is "working at pace" to support de-escalation and peace but acknowledged the conflict will affect the country's future.

He said a meeting to be hosted this week by Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper will aim to advance maritime security in the Gulf.

Following that meeting, UK military planners will convene to assess how to "marshal our capabilities" to ensure the Strait of Hormuz is accessible and safe after fighting ends, he said.

Asked whether people should change their behavior at home amid an energy crisis, Starmer said the government is "carefully" monitoring the situation.

"We have to have closer ties with Europe" on defense, security and the country's economic future, he said, after Trump raised the possibility of a US withdrawal from NATO.

"Whatever the pressure on me and others, whatever the noise, I'm going to act in the British national interest in all decisions that I make, and that's why I've been absolutely clear that this is not our war, or we're not going to get dragged into it," he added.

Starmer's comments came after Trump told Britain's Daily Telegraph he is considering pulling the US out of NATO after allies refused to support the Iran war.
