Top US congressional leaders said Wednesday that King Charles will address a joint meeting of Congress on April 28, marking a historic moment in US-UK relations.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, Senate Majority Leader John Thune, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries confirmed that the British monarch will deliver remarks later this month.

The address comes as the US prepares to commemorate the 250th anniversary of its independence, a milestone leaders say provides an opportunity to reflect not only on the nation's founding but also on its enduring alliances.

In a formal invitation letter, the bipartisan group emphasized the historical and cultural ties between the United States and the United Kingdom.

"This year, the United States will mark the 250th anniversary of its independence. As we celebrate this historic milestone and recommit ourselves to the principles upon which our nation was founded, we also recognize that the American experiment endures in no small part because of the British tradition from which it sprang," they wrote.

The leaders added that the address will offer King Charles a platform to outline his vision for the future of US-UK relations and reaffirm the longstanding alliance between the two nations at what they described as a "pivotal time in history."
