Croatia announced the replacement of its Defense Minister Mario Banozic with Ivan Anusic on Monday following a fatal traffic accident.

Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic told the media that after holding consultations, he nominated Anusic for the roles of Minister of Defense and Deputy Prime Minister. Anusic's appointment received backing from both the party and its partners.

"I believe that he will perform the duties of the Minister of Defense very well until the end of the mandate of our second government," said Plenkovic.

Plenkovic will send a letter to the President of the Parliament to adopt the changes.

"I believe that the competent Committee will be convened, I assume on Wednesday. As for the vote, it is scheduled for Thursday," said Plenkovic.

Banozic sustained serious injuries in a traffic accident on Saturday morning.

The incident took place when Banozic, 44, was driving near Vinlovic, and his car collided with a van, resulting in the van driver's death.

According to local media, the accident happened while Banozic was en route to a hunting trip on a rainy and foggy day.

Following the confirmation from Prosecutor Biljana Luburic that Banozic caused the accident, Plenkovic relieved him of his duties on Saturday.
