Five people have been killed and four others injured after a crane collapsed on a construction site in the far western Cambodian town of Poipet on the border with Thailand.

The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon, Banteay Meanchey provincial police chief Ath Khem told local broadcaster Voice of Democracy (VOD).

The casualties were all people who lived nearby, Khem said, without elaborating further.

The accident is the latest in a string of high profile worksite deaths in Cambodia. In January, 36 people were killed when a building collapsed in the seaside province of Kep.

Six months earlier, another building collapse in the coastal city of Sihanoukville left 28 dead.

In the wake of both tragedies, authorities have promised to improve safety compliance, which is notoriously lax in Cambodia's construction sector.
