German foreign minister stresses support for two-state solution

"The two-state formula is the only solution to the decades-long conflict. We remain united in the need for a negotiated two-state solution," German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas told a press conference following a meeting with his Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi in Amman on Sunday. The minister also pledged further support to UNRWA, the United Nations Palestine Relief and Works Agency boycotted by Washington.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas committed himself on Sunday to the two-state solution to solve the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians as the international community waits for the US peace plan for the Middle East to be unveiled.

After a meeting with his Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi in Amman on Sunday, Maas said: "The two-state formula is the only solution to the decades-long conflict. We remain united in the need for a negotiated two-state solution," This solution envisages the creation of a Palestinian state independent of Israel.

At the same time, he pledged further support to UNRWA, the United Nations Palestine Relief and Works Agency boycotted by Washington.

The work of this relief agency continued to be of great importance in the future, therefore Germany would not end its support, Maas said.

Under President Donald Trump, the US withdrew from funding UNWRA. Washington argues that economic investments are better suited than donations to improve the lives of Palestinians.

The top diplomat said Berlin will provide Amman with a $100-million loan.

Al-Safadi, for his part, said Jordan and Germany agree that the two-state solution is the key to solving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

"Jordan and Germany are partners in supporting UNRWA, which has to continue its role," he said.

UNRWA operates 19 refugee camps in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, where the number of registered refugees currently stands at more than 828,000.

The agency also runs dozens of refugee camps in the Gaza Strip, Lebanon, Syria and Jordan.

The Palestinian leadership accuses the U.S. administration, which halted all funding to UNRWA last year, of seeking to undermine the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes in historical Palestine.

Trump's advisor and son-in-law, Jared Kushner, will soon present a peace plan for the deadlocked conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.

According to US media, there indications that the plan's promises of financials gains are intended to persuade the Palestinians to give up on the demand for a state of their own.

On June 25-26, the small Gulf state of Bahrain is to host an investment conference on the Palestinian territories.

The Palestinians reject the event because they are not prepared to make political concessions to gain material improvements.

Maas' regional tour already took him to Iraq. He is also scheduled to visit Iran and the United Arab Emirates.

The tour comes amid rising tension between the U.S. and Iran since 2017, when Washington withdrew from a landmark nuclear agreement between Tehran and the P5+1 group of nations (the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany).
