YPG political wing of PKK, Republican US Senator Graham says

The People's Protection Units (YPG) is "clearly" tied to the PKK, listed as a terrorist group by Turkey, the U.S., and the European Union, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham said during a visit to the Turkish capital on Saturday.

The People's Protection Units (YPG) is the political wing of the PKK, Republican U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham said Saturday, a day after he met President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and other Turkish officials in Turkey's capital Ankara.

Senator Graham noted that there is sufficient evidence to prove that the two have links.

Furthermore, Graham said U.S. Chief of Staff Joseph Dunford was working on a plan with Ankara to move YPG elements away from Turkey.

Graham also noted that the secure zone near the border will be established for the security of Turkey.

The senator also suggested that the U.S. should follow a careful policy with regards to the withdrawal of troops from Syria.

Washington's YPG policy has caused a major loss of trust in Ankara, as promises made previously have not been kept. During the former U.S. President Barack Obama's term, it was claimed that the YPG forces would move to the east of the Euphrates River, a process that never took place.

Moreover, Ankara was told that arms given to the YPG would be retrieved. This was another claim U.S. officials made but failed to convince Turkish authorities on whether it would be kept.
