An explosion at a shopping centre in the Malaysian state of Sarawak left at least three people dead on Tuesday, according to local news outlet The New Straits Times.

At least 25 people were injured, with an additional seven in critical condition, according to state news agency Bernama.

The explosion, which occurred at City One Megamall in the state capital Kuching, is suspected of being caused by a gas leak, according to fire department officials.

Video footage from local broadcaster Astro Awani showed the ground floor of the mall strewn with cables and Christmas decorations in the aftermath.

People were pictured lying on the ground, some with ripped clothing, as civil defence officials carried out rescue operations.
