France has reacted with anger after US President Donald Trump reneged on a closing declaration from the Group of Seven (G7) summit at the weekend.
"International cooperation cannot depend on anger or small words," the Elysee Palace said on Sunday in a statement carried by news agency AFP.
Trump announced that he was retracting US endorsement of the joint communique via Twitter shortly after the summit ended, accusing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of making false statements at a press conference after Trump's departure.
France and Europe would stick by the communique, signed on the closing day of the G7 summit in La Malbaie, Canada, the Elysee said. That the United States had later retracted its endorsement showed Washington to be "incoherent and inconsistent," the official residency of French President Emmanuel Macron said.
This year's G7 summit was marked by disarray, with commentators speaking of a "G6+1" format of Canada, Britain, Italy, Japan, Germany and France - with the US standing as an outlier on several global issues.
Macron had said earlier he was glad that Europe had presented a united front of the issues, including trade and the environment.
