The Turkish Red Crescent has distributed food items among 1,000 families in the walled ancient city of Harar in eastern Ethiopia.

The delegation also gave an Iftar dinner to more than 1,000 children.

Turkish Red Crescent board member Sabahattin Tezdig told Anadolu Agency: "The food provided is enough for 1,000 families for one month.

"Throughout the holy month of Ramadan, we want to reach out to 10 million people all over the world with food donations," Tezdig said, adding his association is also distributing clothes among the needy.

"We have already reached our plan of meeting the 10-million people target," he said.

According to him, his delegation observed poor water provision and inadequate hospital services in the city of Harar.

"We have been providing our charitable activities regardless of religious or political affiliations," he said.

Ties between Turkey and the eastern city of Harar go back a long time; Turkey had a consulate in Harar long before it opened its embassy in Addis Ababa.
