UN body launches new plan for Syrian refugees in Turkey

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on Tuesday launched a new two-year plan aiming to further improve lives of Syrian refugees in Turkey.

The plan -- titled Syria Refugee Resilience Plan -- aims to improve food security, strengthen livelihoods and enhance the resilience of Syrian refugees and host communities.

Viorel Gutu, FAO representative in Turkey, told Anadolu Agency that they have been researching on ways to help the Turkish government and the Syrian refugees in terms of creating job opportunities.

Gutu said that their main target is to ensure a certain level of quality life for families, which are their main target. The plan aims to provide adequate nutrition, education and healthcare to children, he added.

He said they are also aiming to provide tens of thousands of potential jobs for the refugees.

Gutu said many Turkish citizens were donating in the program, and praised the efforts of the Turkish government and the people for hosting the Syrians.

FAO's short and medium-term strategy to address the Syria crisis is aligned with the government's strategy and policy and ongoing initiatives of partners, according to the organization.

It works in close coordination with different stakeholders -- especially Turkey's Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock, provincial breakdown of refugees and asylum-seekers in Turkey, Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency, Directorate General of Migration Management, Ministry of Labour and Social Security, Ministry of Family and Social Policies, UN agencies and humanitarian and development partners.
