Bayern Munich football star Franck Ribery has expressed solidarity with a 2-month-old baby who lost his mother in a Syrian regime attack as well as the people of a besieged suburb of Damascus.

Baby Karim, who lost his left eye last month in the besieged suburb of Eastern Ghouta, on the outskirts of the Syrian capital, has become a symbol of resistance to Bashar al-Assad's regime.

Former French international Ribery posted a photo of himself on Twitter covering his left eye to show solidarity with Karim.

He also used the hashtag #SolidarityWithKarim with a heart emoji.

Eastern Ghouta has remained under siege by Syrian regime forces since late 2012.

The ongoing blockade has left the district's roughly 400,000 residents struggling with malnutrition and paralyzed local healthcare facilities.

Meanwhile, social media has seen an outpouring of support for the injured baby.

Twitter users across the world posted pictures with their hands clasping their left eyes shut. "#BabyKarim I see you" and "#EasternGhouta siege must end" were both trending Twitter hashtags on Monday.
