5.4 magnitude quake in central Philippines

At least 50 students passed out after a 5.4 magnitude earthquake shook the province of Leyte in Central Philippines Monday morning, according to a local radio station.

A quake hit Ormoc city at 9.41 a.m. (0141 GMT) on Monday, which was said to be an aftershock of the 6.5-magnitude tremor that jolted the province on Thursday and killed at least two people.

A local radio station reported that several ambulances and doctors rushed to Ormoc's National High School to administer first-aid after dozens of students lost consciousness as a result of the latest quake.

GMA news quoted Ormoc City Mayor Richard Gomez as saying that some students were given emergency treatment.

The tremor was also felt in other nearby cities and towns, which was followed by two immediate 3.3 and 3.2 magnitudes aftershocks.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has recorded over 500 aftershocks since Thursday.

Aside from the two fatalities, more than 200 injuries and over 1,000 houses were damaged, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

The Philippines archipelago is located along the Pacific Ocean's "Ring of Fire", where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur.
