Extension of state of emergency recommended

Turkey's National Security Council, The M.G.K., recommended the extension of Turkey's state of emergency. The recommendation is to extend the post July 15 coup attempt state of emergency by three months.

The National Security Council was chaired by President Recep Tayyip Rrdoğan on monday.

"The decision to recommend extending the state of emergency was taken in order to continue ensuring the protection of democracy, the rule of law, and the rights and freedoms of our citizens in an efficient manner," the council said in a statement after a meeting which lasted for about 50 minutes.

The first state of emergency was initially ordered by parliament on July 21 and then extended again on oct. 11. On Jan. 3, the state of emergency was extended for another period of three months.
