Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas deny role in Hisham Barakat killing

A court in Cairo has recommended the death penalty for 30 people convicted of involvement in the assassination of controversial Egyptian public prosecutor Hisham Barakat.

Barakat was killed in a car bomb attack on his convoy in Cairo in 2015.

The prosecutor had sent thousands of members of the Muslim Brotherhood to prison following popular uprisings led by the group against the coup regime of Abdel Fattah al-Sisi...

Egypt blamed the Muslim Brotherhood and the Gaza-based Hamas political group for Barakat's killing, although both groups have denied they were involved.

General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi ousted President Mohamed Morsi, a democratically elected Muslim Brotherhood leader, in a coup in 2013.
