Passenger bus crash claims 15 lives in western Turkey

A passenger bus veered and tumbled off a highway in western Turkey, killing 15 people on Sunday. The governor’s office of Balikesir province said 17 people injured in the crash were being treated in five hospitals.

A bus accident in western Turkey on Sunday claimed 15 lives, officials reported.

The bus, coming from the Black Sea province of Zonguldak, lost control and overturned on the Balıkesir Highway en route to Edremit in the western Balıkesir province.

Rescue and emergency teams were immediately dispatched, but 11 people died at the scene, and four later succumbed to injuries in hospital, despite doctors' best efforts.

Visiting the injured, Balıkesir Governor Hasan Sildak said that three of 17 people injured in the accident were discharged from hospital after treatment.

An investigation of the cause of the accident is underway.
