Turkish Foreign Ministry on Monday offered condolences over demise of Egypt's first democratically elected President Mohamed Morsi during a court hearing in Egypt.

"We are deeply saddened by the passing away of Mohamed Morsi, the first democratically elected President of Egypt who was deposed by a military coup," the ministry said in a statement.

The ministry said Morsi would be remembered as a prominent figure in Egypt's efforts on the path of democracy.

"We wish Allah's mercy upon him and extend our condolences to the brotherly people of Egypt," it added.

Morsi died Monday during a court appearance to face charges many believed were politically-motivated.

The 67-year-old lost consciousness during the string of legal procedures he was forced to face since his ouster and imprisonment during a 2013 military coup.

There were six criminal charges against the former leader, including jailbreak, murder, spying for Qatar, spying for Hamas and Hezbollah, insulting the judiciary and involvement in terrorism.
