Dominik Szoboszlai converted a penalty in the ninth minute of stoppage time as Liverpool came from behind twice to earn a dramatic 2-2 draw against Newcastle United on Sunday.
Anthony Elanga gave Newcastle an early lead at St. James' Park before Cody Gakpo equalized in the second half.
Substitute Joe Willock restored the hosts' advantage less than three minutes later, but Szoboszlai's late spot kick denied Newcastle victory in Matthias Jaissle's first Premier League match in charge.
Newcastle opened the scoring through a counterattack in the fifth minute.
Liverpool left space in midfield, allowing William Osula to surge forward before playing Elanga through on goal. The Swedish winger finished calmly past Alisson Becker and into the bottom-left corner.
The goal ended Elanga's run of 40 league appearances without scoring, dating back to April 2025.
Liverpool nearly equalized in the 18th minute. Rio Ngumoha's cross was overhit, but the visitors regained possession and Milos Kerkez delivered another ball into the area.
After Newcastle failed to clear, Florian Wirtz fired toward the bottom corner, but debutant goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek produced a sharp save.
Newcastle threatened again in the 24th minute when Yoane Wissa played Osula into the area. Jeremy Jacquet applied pressure, while Alisson left his line quickly to smother the forward's attempt.
The hosts maintained their advantage until halftime despite Liverpool controlling more possession and winning several corners.
Liverpool drew level in the 54th minute through Gakpo.
Ryan Gravenberch played a direct pass to his fellow Dutchman, who turned and advanced toward the penalty area before drilling a powerful shot into the bottom-left corner.
Newcastle responded almost immediately.
Wissa led a counterattack and released Joe Willock, who had entered the match moments earlier. The midfielder cut inside and curled a shot past Alisson from about 20 yards, with the ball striking the post before crossing the line in the 57th minute.
Wissa came close to extending Newcastle's lead in the 68th minute but failed to connect with Lewis Hall's low cross across the six-yard box.
Alisson then kept Liverpool in the match in the 86th minute, racing off his line and blocking Wissa's low effort with his legs.
Liverpool were awarded a penalty deep into stoppage time after substitute Victor Munoz drove into the area and was brought down by Hall.
Szoboszlai stepped up and powered the penalty into the top-left corner in the 99th minute, giving Hornicek no chance.
The result gave Newcastle and Liverpool one point each from their opening match of the Premier League season.
