Nordic football associations say they've 'lost confidence' in FIFA President Infantino

The Nordic football associations of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and the Faroe Islands declared their loss of confidence in FIFA President Gianni Infantino and expressed serious concerns about FIFA's governance following his plans involving private investment in World Cup commercial interests.

Six Nordic football associations said on Sunday that they have "lost confidence" in FIFA President Gianni Infantino following his failed plan to open World Cup-linked commercial interests to private investment.

The football associations of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and the Faroe Islands issued a joint statement after a meeting in Helsinki, expressing "serious concerns" about FIFA's governance and senior-level decision-making.

"The six Nordic football associations have lost confidence in the FIFA President and have serious concerns about the governance and high-level decision-making of the organisation," the statement said.

The associations said they stood firmly with UEFA and measures proposed jointly by its national associations, while demanding safeguards against private ownership of FIFA's governance or competitions.

"We expect that FIFA provides binding assurances that FIFA will never again open its governance or competitions to private ownership," the statement said.

"We also support the demand put forward by AFC, CONCACAF and UEFA, for a fully third-party review of the events surrounding the FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal."

The associations called on FIFA to commission a broader independent examination of its governance structure.

"We also call for FIFA to initiate a comprehensive independent review of whether FIFA's governance framework provides the independence, checks and balances, transparency and accountability, that were intended when FIFA adopted its reform programme in 2016."

UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) earlier issued a joint statement criticizing Infantino's handling of the proposal and calling for an independent third-party review.

The three confederations have also pressed Infantino to resign.

Separately, several national associations, including England's Football Association, have withdrawn their support for Infantino ahead of the next FIFA presidential election in March 2027.

FIFA earlier apologized for errors in the process surrounding the FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal and withdrew the plan following widespread opposition.
