European football supremo Aleksander Ceferin has said that the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) will be used in future UEFA competitions but only once the technology is foolproof.
Ceferin told Tuesday's Kicker sports magazine that next season is too early for the VAR debut in the Champions League and Europa League as ongoing tests in Germany, Italy and other countries have shown it still lacks clarity.
"People don't understand it because it isn't explained to them precisely enough," Ceferin said. "Champions League is top of the top of the top. You can't have a trial run there. All rules have to be clear."
As a result, the UEFA president Ceferin also questioned whether the World Cup was "the right stage to test a new technology," fearing "many unclear situations" at the upcoming tournament in Russia.
However, he also said there was no doubt that VAR will eventually be used at European national team and club events. UEFA so far neither uses VAR nor goalline technology, rather relying on additional assistant referees.
"There is no turning back concerning the use of video evidence in football. UEFA has to introduce VAR as well," Ceferin said.
