The World Cup 2018 to open with hosts Russia taking on Saudi Arabia

Russia will play Saudi Arabia in the opening game of next year's World Cup, a match between the lowest ranked teams in the FIFA rankings.

The 2018 World Cup will open with hosts Russia taking on Saudi Arabia in Group A while champions Germany have been given a group including Mexico.

The Group A match will take place on June 14 at the 81,000-capacity Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.

Also in the group are Uruguay and Egypt.

Joachim Loew's title-holders were placed in Group F in Friday's Kremlin Palace draw and begin their defence against Mexico in Moscow on June 17. They also meet Sweden, victors over Italy in the play-offs, in Sochi and South Korea in Kazan

The tournament opens June 14 in Moscow with Russia, the lowest-ranked of 32 participating teams, taking on the Saudis. They will also meet Egypt and Uruguay in a group which gives them a strong chance of avoiding the fate of South Africa, so far the only hosts eliminated before the knock-out phase.

Other intriguing clashes include European champions Spain v Portugal in Group B, two-time winners Argentina v debutantes Iceland in Group D and Belgium v England in Group G, which includes the other first-timers Panama.

Record five-time champions Brazil meet Switzerland, Costa Rica and Serbia in Group E.

The groups set to compete in the World Cup are as follows:

Group A: Russia, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Uruguay

Group B: Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Iran

Group C: France, Australia, Peru, Denmark

Group D: Argentina, Iceland, Croatia, Nigeria

Group E: Brazil, Switzerland, Costa Rica, Serbia

Group F: Germany, Mexico, Sweden, South Korea

Group G: Belgium, Panama, Tunisia, England

Group H: Poland, Senegal, Colombia, Japan
