Trump stirs controversy with $5,000 payout pledge
US President Donald Trump rolled out a series of promises and remarks ahead of the congressional midterm elections aimed at energizing the Republican base.
Promising a $5,000 payment to every adult, the US president also floated the idea of renaming the Strait of Hormuz, putting forward the suggestion of calling it the "Trump Strait."

Trump claimed that the United States had been in poor political and economic condition during Joe Biden's presidency, and argued that the country had recovered under his own leadership.
He said the US had pursued an "open borders" policy and asserted that he had ended it as soon as he took office, adding that irregular migrant crossings at the border had dropped to zero in recent months.
Referring to Democrats as "leftist communists," Trump called on all Republicans to vote for Republican candidates in the Nov. 3 congressional midterm elections.
An astonishing renaming proposal for the "Strait of Hormuz"
In the Iran-related part of his speech, Trump argued that the US had gone to war with Iran to prevent the country from obtaining nuclear weapons, saying: "We are winning this war."
"Once we win the ongoing war with Iran, oil prices will fall. We will win this war," Trump said.
Claiming that the US controls trade in the Strait of Hormuz, he added:
"I think we should give the Strait of Hormuz another name. We should call it the 'Trump Strait.'"
Emphasizing the issue of renaming the Strait of Hormuz, Trump continued:
"That's what it will be called, ladies and gentlemen. I'm going to make an announcement on that, we're going to call it the 'Trump Strait,' and I'm sure the leaders of Iran will be very pleased about it."
