New subpoenas broaden corruption probe involving Menendez

According to two individuals who have knowledge of the situation, North Bergen Mayor Nicholas Sacco, a well-known and influential politician in New Jersey, is reported to have received at least one subpoena.
The mayor's representative stated that the mayor and the Township of North Bergen have always adhered to the protocols of cooperating fully with law enforcement and will continue to do so with any inquiry they receive.
For several months, Senator Menendez has been facing a criminal inquiry into whether he and his spouse inappropriately received money and presents from the owners of IS EG Halal, a halal meat business situated in Edgewater.
"I became aware of an investigation; I am not aware of the extent or the individuals involved. I am, of course, prepared to assist the authorities with any inquiries if requested," Menendez said.
The recently issued subpoenas, including the one sent to Sacco, are not related to any accusations of wrongdoing involving the meat company or Menendez, two sources said.
The sources also noted that the subpoenas partially request information concerning particular legislative modifications in New Jersey. However, they did not provide any specific details regarding the nature of these changes.
The subpoena for Sacco, a Democrat, was released on Wednesday, one day after he was re-elected as the mayor.
Sacco's spokesperson underlined, "We believe it would not be appropriate to make any further comments at this moment."
