Turkish engineer creates AI-powered EV charger with global ambitions

A 26-year-old software engineer from Kayseri, Ömerhan Üstüner, inspired by a science fiction series he watched, has successfully developed an AI-powered charging unit for electric vehicles.

After completing his university education in the United States, Üstüner returned to his hometown and decided to integrate the AI system he saw in the sci-fi series into EV chargers.

Following about a year of R&D, Üstüner produced the AI-supported electric vehicle charger, which provides features such as advising users on the cheapest electricity usage hours, fault alerts and repair suggestions, multi-user management, and consumption tracking via a mobile app.

Üstüner told Anadolu Agency that they wanted to take EV chargers for individual users to the next level with this new technology.

"I was watching a series at home. It had a strange plot. AI was just emerging back then. In the show, a man transformed his wife into AI and trapped her inside a painting, inside a computer system. That's when I realized AI could enter products and devices. I thought, 'Why don't we put it into a charger?' After a year of planning, we created this technology. Since no one had done this before, the R&D took a long time," he said.

"We want to show our AI to the world"

Üstüner emphasized that he wants to demonstrate what a Turkish company can achieve in software and technology globally.

He highlighted the many features of the AI-powered charger:

"We have our own WiseCar mobile app. It has a chatbot, voice assistant, and AI. You can interact with it, get reports about charging. One of the most used features is the AI analyzing your region's electricity data to tell you the cheapest charging times. For example, what would normally cost 350 lira drops to 280 lira during certain hours. The AI can start charging automatically at those times, notify you when done, and offer solutions. It provides daily, weekly, and monthly reports. A single charger can be shared by 3-5 people, and the AI tracks usage separately. You can adjust amperage and duration through the app, get smart notifications, and monitor all device data. Our goal is to make WiseCar known worldwide and showcase our technology and AI. We already have a company in Florida and a distributor in Paris and are expanding internationally. Some people don't believe Turkish companies can produce technology—I find that frustrating, and we've shown we can do it."

Üstüner added that the devices have an 8-layer protection system, carry the international CE certificate, and are manufactured according to EU standards.
