Artificial Intelligence (AI) has indisputably become a dominant force in our lives, influencing everything from online shopping to medical diagnoses.
At its core, AI is designed to learn from data and make decisions or predictions based on it.
This objective, albeit straightforward, can become convoluted when the data is skewed or inherently biased. Case in point: the purported bias against Palestinians in AI systems, including ChatGPT, the popular language model developed by OpenAI.
Mona Chalabi, a British author and journalist, askes two questions regarding the Israel-Palestine conflict with ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot.
The responses provided exhibited a noticeable bias and were subsequently shared online to highlight the distinction in the AI's tone and stance when confronted with an impartial question about Israelis and Palestinians.
Chalabi emphasized that "ChatGPT, much like all artificial intelligence, has been educated by humans. It is incumbent upon us to exercise care in our language usage and engage in critical thinking."
Chalabi further asserted, "Every individual is entitled to justice, but genuine justice remains elusive if the complexity of the issue is conveniently dismissed for some while not for others."
