The space watchdog has identified and tracked numerous potentially dangerous asteroids in an effort to understand and mitigate possible risks.
The space agency recently announced the exact date of concern: May 24, 2023.
Scientists and astronomers are closely monitoring the asteroid known as "Potentially Hazardous 2023-CL3", which has been identified as an object with a trajectory that could collide with Earth on that specific date.
It is important to note that despite the "potentially hazardous" designation, the actual probability of impact remains low. It will reach a distance of 7.2 million kilometers from our planet.
According to preliminary calculations, the chances of this asteroid colliding with our planet are extremely remote.
Possible threats
NASA and other space agencies around the world have developed a planetary defense plan, which seeks to mitigate the potential impact of future dangerous asteroids.
In 2016, the US agency created the Planetary Defense Coordination Office (PDCO) dedicated to supervising projects for the detection and classification of near-Earth objects that could pose a threat to the planet.
The plan includes the improvement of early detection systems, the development of diversion technologies and international collaboration in the event of an emergency.
